About Carnew
Carnew is located on the R725, Carlow to Gorey Road and nestled in the South Wicklow Hills just shy of the Co. Wexford border. Carnew or Carn an Bhua meaning Victory Mound is a modern market town. In Carnew you will find shops, restaurants, pubs, a boutique clothes shop, café, chemist, bank and credit union. The town is located 17km from Gorey, one of the main towns in Co. Wexford and 42km from Carlow town.
A bustling and vibrant mart is held weekly just outside of the town. The town itself is steeped in Irish History. Carnew Castle, one of the many places mentioned in the 1798 rebellion is located within the town.
Carnew has a strong heritage of drama and music. The South Wicklow Drama Committee was founded in 2004 and held its first festival in St. Brigid’s Hall, Carnew in March 2005. Since then the committee and festival has grown in strength each year. Carnew Musical Society presents a musical annually in November and Kilrush Drama Group also perform their productions in Carnew. Students at Coláiste Bhríde perform a musical every second year and the Transition Years put on a night of drama annually. The school’s musical talent can be seen and heard from the choir, concert band and trad band.
Carnew has a deep tradition in sports with many adults and children involved in the local Carnew Emmets GAA Club, Carnew Camogie Club, Carnew Ladies Football Club, two Carnew soccer clubs, Horse Riding, showjumping, golf and Horseshoe Throwing. Carnew also has a thriving Foróige Chillax Youth Cafe.
The town is home to many events which include: The Garden County Country Fest , Carnew Heritage Day, Carnew St. Patrick’s Day Parade; Carnew Agricultural Show and Carnew Ploughing Match.
